The K20 is the “headquarters” of the der Kunstsammlung Nordrhein-Westfalen. With its exceptionally high-quality collection, the K20 Grabbeplatz occupies an outstanding position within the international museum landscape. Found in the permanent collection are important individual works by artists ranging from Pablo Picasso to Joseph Beuys, as well as an ensemble of works by Paul Klee which recently reached the number 100.

The museum’s regular program is supplemented by numerous temporary exhibitions. Divided into two large departments, art before 1945 forms one of the two main foci of the K20 Grabbeplatz. We begin chronologically with works of Fauvism, Expressionism, the “Blaue Reiter” group, Cubism, and “Pittura metafisca.” Then we come to the prevailing artistic tendencies of the 1920s and 1930s, namely Dada and Surrealism, together with their antitheses, Constructivism, the Bauhaus, and “de Stijl.”

Another group a group of exhibits is devoted to the period after World War II, and extends from works by the American Abstract Expressionists all the way to contemporary photoartists such as Jeff Wall and Bernd and Hilla Becher. Another highpoint of the collection of the K20 Grabbeplatz is European painting, represented by the works of Gerhard Richter, Per Kirkeby, and Markus Lüpertz. Also outstanding is the wide-ranging ensemble of works by Joseph Beuys, which includes the late masterwork “Palazzo Regale” (1985).

Hornet

Found on Paul-Klee-Platz, directly behind the Kunstsammlung, is a 27-meter-long mural by Sarah Morris. The English-American artist and filmmaker uses hand-painted tiles whose overall honeycombed structure alludes to the movements of hornets. Sarah Morris’s paintings and site-specific murals are positioned along the threshold between the geometric abstract art of modernism and contemporary graphic design.
