SONGS FROM THE SECOND FLOOR
Director: Roy Andersson
Sweden 2000, 95 min., original version with German subtitles
Accompanying the exhibition NEW METALLURGISTS curated by Cao Fei and Yang Beichen, JULIA STOSCHEK FOUNDATION will be showing the STUDIO 54 film program in the cinema of the Düsseldorf collection building. The Chinese artist and curator Cao Fei (b. 1978) has chosen the film for the month of December.
Cao Fei is known for her versatile practice, which includes various media such as video, photography and multimedia installation, and which always deals with the latest media achievements. Cao Fei is particularly interested in China’s social and urban situation, which is characterized by massive changes. Her works are currently exhibited in a large solo exhibition at K21 in the Kunstsammlung Nordrhein-Westfalen.
Cao Fei chose the film SONGS FROM THE SECOND FLOOR (2000) by Swedish director Roy Andersson for the screening.
A man is standing in a subway car, his face dirty from soot. In his right hand he carries a plastic bag with documents, or rather the charred rest of them. In a corridor, a man desperately clings to the legs of his boss, who has just fired him. In a café, a young man is waiting for his father, who has just torched his furniture company for the insurance money. Everything and everyone is on its way to somewhere, but the goal and its meaning have long since been lost. Andersson’s film, which won the special prize of the Cannes Film Festival jury in 2002, creates a surreal world that is marked by absurdity and seems to have gone off the rails.
In cooperation with the Kunstsammlung Nordrhein-Westfalen, Düsseldorf.
