Kunstsammlung NRW - K21 Ständehaus

© Kunstsammlung NRW - K21 Ständehaus

The former Ständehaus (Parliament building) in the Neo-renaissance style was converted into a functional and striking museum which includes the large piazza of the interior courtyard and the spectacular space set beneath the enormous glass cupola.

While the K20 is devoted primarily to 20th century art, the K21 Ständehaus forges ahead into the 21st century with a focus on international contemporary art. The second venue of the Kunstsammlung Nordrhein-Westfalen presents its extensive collection – which begins with the late-1970s and continues up to the present, and includes numerous artist’s rooms as well as film and video installations – on five different levels. Found here are works by artists such as Eija-Liisa Ahtila, Marcel Broodthaers, Katharina Fritsch, Robert Gober, Dan Graham, Andreas Gursky, Candida Höfer, William Kentridge, Imi Knoebel, Sherry Levine, Paul McCarthy, Reinhard Mucha, Nam June Paik, Thomas Ruff, Thomas Schütte, Thomas Struth, and Jeff Wall.

Temporary exhibitions are presented in the large exhibition hall in the basement level.

PARDO BAR unter der Leitung von Kofler & Kompanie.

Pardo Bar

Found in the ground floor level of the K21 is the Pardo Bar. Responsible for the artistic design of the bar was Cuban artist Jorge Pardo, who was born in Cuba. His design includes the walls and the lighting scheme. Covering the entire café is a pattern of soap bubbles in orange and green. In the evening, green interlocking shade lamps transform the room into a psychedelic bar.

The opening hours of the Pardo Bar extend beyond those of the museum.
