KIT - Kunst im Tunnel

Beneath the Rheinuferpromenade (Rhine River Promenade), in a room which lies between the tunnel sections for automobile traffic, is KIT – Kunst im Tunnel/Art in the Tunnel. The visible entrance to KIT is a glass pavilion facing the Rhine River. From this point, a staircase leads down into the subterranean exhibition space, which measures more than 800 m².

Here, promising young internationally known artists are exhibited in regular temporary exhibitions. Among them are graduates of the Düsseldorf Art Academy. One reason why KIT enjoys an excellent reputation in the young art scene beyond the borders of the town.

Art in Düsseldorf: A special perspective

Books outdoor

A bookcase which stands outside, and from which one can simply remove a volume? On the Rhine River Promenade, directly next to KIT, it is a reality. Here stands a set of steel shelves weighing more than 800 kg and designed by the Cologne architect Hans-Jürgen Greve. Whoever feels like reading after visiting a museum or during a stroll can simply choose a book from the shelf, sit him or herself down on a park bench, or even take it home. And whoever has old books he or she no longer needs can simply place them on the shelves – any time of night or day.
